Assistant Professor for Solar Thermal Energy Technologies at The Cyprus Institute

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a non-profit science and technology institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees (www.cyi.ac.cy). Research in the Cyprus Institute is conducted in its three research centers: the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC), and the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CASTORC).

The EEWRC addressed issues of regional interest and of global significance in the fields of energy, environmental and water research, with a focus on their specific regional, East-Mediterranean manifestations. Its research agenda addresses the great challenges related to: the mitigation and adaptation strategies necessitated by climate change, a reduced dependence on hydrocarbon energy sources and achieving a low carbon economy through the employment of renewables (solar), synergies between Renewable and Hydrocarbon energy sources and enabling a sustainable management of water and other natural resources in arid and semi-arid environments.

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) invites applications for Assistant Professor(s) in the field of: Solar Thermal Energy Technologies with research to be primarily conducted at its Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC), within the broad framework of the recently awarded European Research Area (ERA) Chair in Solar Thermal Technologies for the Eastern Mediterranean (CySTEM).

As stated by the European Commission in its website, “the “ERA Chairs” is an important part of the EU’s effort to unlock Europe’s potential in research and innovation.” It is an ambitious action funded under Horizon 2020. The holder of the CySTEM ERA Chair is Prof. Manuel J. Blanco, who is currently also the Chair of SolarPACES, the International Energy Agency’s Technology Collaboration Program for CST related technologies.

Description of the Position

The new Assistant Professor(s) will advance EEWRC’s research agenda related to Solar Thermal Energy research in close collaboration with the Solar Energy and Desalination research group, the CySTEM ERA Chair, and the Center’s Director. The successful candidate(s) will be actively engaged with the on-going research, the development of novel ideas and concepts, and the design, construction and testing of experimental components and units associated with the Solar Thermal Energy and/or Desalination research carried out at the CyI. Responsibilities

The successful candidate(s) will be responsible for helping to shape and advance the Cyprus

Institute’s and EEWRC's research agenda by:

  • Developing and implementing strategies appropriate to the Institute’s mission;
  • Actively participating in the creation of a world-class research program in atmospheric sciences;
  • Securing financial and other resources from national and international sources;
  • Mentoring, educating and providing research guidance to graduate students in CyI's doctoral program (particularly the Environment and Atmospheric Sciences program);
  • Initiating and sustaining high-level collaborative projects with leading research institutions that conduct research in areas related to his/her respective fields;
  • Communicating the results and implications of research conducted at EEWRC and The Cyprus Institute at all levels, including the academic community, the public at large and political and economical decision makers.
  • Be engaged in the activities for the Graduate School of the Institute, including teaching and developing courses at the Masters and Doctoral level.

Profile

The successful candidate(s) are expected to be scholars of international standing with a minimum of 3 years of post-doctoral experience (following completion of PhD degree) with extensive research and teaching experience in at least one of the following fields:

  1. Solar thermal technologies  with an emphasis on Heliostats, Central Receiver systems and Thermal Energy Storage
  2. Thermal and process engineering or experimental physics of relevance to the field of Solar Energy
  3. Mechanical Systems design, policy and analysis.
  4. Techno-economic modelling and analysis of energy systems.
  5. The candidate(s) should have proven expertise and demonstrated credentials in at least one of the above fields. The selected candidate(s) must have excellent interpersonal skills aimed at maintaining contacts in academic, business and governmental circles. Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential. Knowledge of the Greek language will be considered an advantage.

Postdoctoral Scientist for CSP Technologies at The Cyprus Institute

The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit science and technology institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research aims of the CyI are represented by three research centers: the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CASTORC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Center (STARC), and the Energy Environment Water Research Center (EEWRC). Considerable cross-center interaction is a characteristic of the Institute’s culture.

The CyI invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scientist(s) in Concentrated Thermal Technologies.

The successful applicant(s) will be actively engaged with the on-going research at the Cyprus Institute in Concentrating Solar Thermal (CST) technologies. They will be part of the research team associated with the European Research Area (ERA) Chair in Solar Thermal Technologies for the Eastern Mediterranean (CySTEM). The postdoctoral appointment(s) will be initially for a fixed term period of 2 or 3 years, with the option of renewal until the total duration of appointment of the postdoctoral fellow(s) at the Institute reaches 4 years, depending on performance and availability of funds. The annual salary is to be internationally competitive and will be determined based on the applicants’ experience and qualifications. In addition to the salary, each postdoctoral fellow will have a career development plan tailored to its specific circumstances, interest, experience and skills, which will include training at CyI, secondments at prestigious research institutions around the world and participation in international conferences and events. In addition, the postdoctoral fellows will have the opportunity to assist in the supervision of doctoral students that study at the CyI’s Graduate School.

Responsibilities

We are very actively developing novel concepts of small scale polygeneration CST systems, with an emphasis on power generation and desalination. The selected Post-doctoral Fellow(s) will focus on one or more of the following research and engineering lines of activity, depending on their interest and skills:

  • Small-scale polygeneration CST system. Design, development, techno-economic modelling, optimization and prototype testing of this type of systems being investigated at the Cyprus Institute.
  • Light Collection and Concentration (LCC) subsystem. Design, development adaptation, simulation, construction and testing of this subsystem, which comprises the heliostat field, the tower(s) and the receiver(s).
  • Solar radiation to thermal conversion subsystem. Design, development adaptation, simulation, construction and testing of this subsystem, which comprises the secondary concentrators, if any, and the receiver(s).
  • Thermal energy storage subsystem. Design, development adaptation, simulation, construction and testing of this subsystem, which comprises, the thermal storage and all auxiliary piping and equipment.
  • Power generation subsystem. Design, development adaptation, simulation, construction and testing of this subsystem, which comprises the power block, and the associated balance of plant.
  • Desalination subsystem. Design, development adaptation, simulation, construction and testing of this subsystem, which comprises the core desalination subsystem and the associated balance of plant.

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD in a relevant field of science or engineering
  • An educational background in one of the following or similar fields:
    • Mechanical engineering
    • Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering
    • Experimental physics
    • Electrical engineering
  • Publications in relevant fields
  • High level of communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to adopt to a multicultural/multinational environment
  • High level of organizational, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential. Knowledge of the Greek language will be considered an advantage.

 

Additional, preferred specialised experience in one or more of the following fields would be considered as an advantage:

  • Thermodynamics and heat transfer
  • Computational and experimental fluid-mechanics
  • Concentrating Solar Thermal systems
  • Polygeneration and desalination
  • Thermal storage types and devices (e.g. molten salts), high temperature engineering
